Bobby Hebb’s story and this anthology of his life and work will provide the world a glimpse into the genius of this artist, writer and performer, as well as insight into his masterpiece, "SUNNY" one of the most beloved, recorded and performed songs in the history of pop music. Here you will find an abundance of melodies and words from Hebb's pen and mind including his many 45 rpm singles, live performances, demo tapes and interviews.

Bobby performed with artists like Bo Diddley, Dave "Baby" Cortez, Poppa John Gordy, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Church and many, many others. Along with this compilation we are creating a 2 cd audio documentary for radio only with some of these recordings, many long lost, to bring further attention to Bobby Hebb's legacy

Bobby Hebb's studio tracks and the music of Bobby Hebb recorded live are an essential look into his artistry and persona. The 1966 tour with the Beatles, featuring Barry and the Remains, the Ronettes and the Cyrkle is so legendary that it overshadowed his tour with the Dick Clark Cavalcade of Stars featuring The Yardbirds (in the days of Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck), Brian Hyland, Gary Lewis & The Playboys and Sam the Sham & The Pharoahs, as well as the tour of the U.K. with the Pirates (Bobby backed by The Pirates without Johnny Kidd.) . The DVD on this boxed set includes commentary from Jim McCarty of the Yardbirds, jazz artist Pat Martino, Bobby's friend Bernard "Pretty" Purdie along with music critics and Bobby himself, providing the viewer with rare footage of Bobby Hebb in concert, on television and in conversation.

Bobby Hebb was known as the “song a day man”, yet he only released three full albums during his lifetime and about a couple of dozen 45 RPMs or cd singles. There are approximately nine unreleased albums including his Portable Music Publishing Demos and other unreleased recordings including the 1979 Fleetwood Studio sessions, the “Brass Album” from 1981/1982, the Bernard Purdie tapes from the 1990s, recordings from two different Japanese tours – Kyoto Japan and then some years later the shows at two different Japanese clubs named Billboard’s (after the magazine)…and the many songs Bobby recorded on this writer's TV show Visual Radio between 1995 and 2004.

Along with the originals Bobby recorded, the cover songs he sang, the music he wrote that other people recorded (some tracks never recorded by Bobby himself,) the dance mixes, the mash-ups, the professionals and amateurs giving different perspectives on Bobby’s artistry on a variety of his compositions there’s also the lineage of friends and musical accompanists who played on versions of “Sunny” or recorded their own renditions of “Sunny”, Melba Moore having a stunning version while being one of the three backing vocalists on Hebb’s #1 Cashbox/Record World, #2 Billboard smash 1966 hit “Sunny.” Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson are the other two artists along with Moore who added their harmonies to the “Sunny” album produced by Jerry Ross.

BOBBY HEBB'S PROUD SOUL HERITAGE Vol. 1

The job of the producer of this boxed set is to gather all this information, include it in text in this 36 page booklet, and “let the music do the talking”, to quote Joe Perry of Aerosmith. It is an honor, and quite a humbling task, as Bobby remains a musical giant still influencing generations of musicians (just look at the hard-rocking takes on “Sunny” with guitar teacher Greg Howe’s instrumental on the internet and dozens of musicians adding their styles and vibrations to the song in this specific setting.)

That the jazz world is so enamored of “Sunny” is as much an accolade as the 1020 or so renditions recorded in studios and placed on fixed mediums. The number of genres the song has touched is extraordinary and keeps growing, another testament to Bobby Hebb’s magic touch.

Even though we lost the man - the individual artist who walked on this planet in the flesh - on August 3, 2010, a little more than a week after his 72nd birthday… much, much too young and a shock to the system, it is the spirit of the man which inspires through the chord changes to “Sunny”, the melody, the structure, the modulation, the sentiment, the perfect lyrics, the positive attitude. “Sunny” is a classic for all the right reasons.

Bobby and I were working on “BOBBY HEBB LIVE”, a new album of concert performances including “Take The A Train”, “Got My Mojo Workin’, "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" and additional songs that Bobby had performed on the cable TV show Visual Radio over the years. We have dozens of them that the world has yet to hear and, after releasing them as they are (many with his nephew Thomas Hebb on bass), there is the potential to add backing tracks to the material with additional musicians for new Bobby Hebb albums in the future. In September of 2013 we recorded drummer Steve Holley, bassist Thomas Hebb and keyboard player David Maxwell on a 2 track of Bobby performing his signature live song, a cover of Preston Foster's "Got My Mojo Workin' " - made famous by Muddy Waters. Peter Calo's guitar was added to create a dramatic rendition of the song Bobby performed at the Blue Morocco in New York as well as onstage opening for the Beatles.

As we catalog the man’s music from the recordings that are in vaults, in Bobby’s own library and in my personal library, there is the potential for a great many new releases by Bobby Hebb. One important such release could be an all instrumental album. A taste of Bobby’s keen sense of song construction and communicating without lyrics is on the final track on disc 1, “Breeze”, written for President Barack Obama. I believe that “Breeze” was Bobby’s final work in the studio and, due to health issues, solely in the roles of composer and producer. Other musicians perform on “Breeze” – supervised by the song master, Bobby Hebb.

Bobby’s instrumental work is mesmerizing. He was as comfortable issuing his feelings and thoughts through the sounds of the instrumentation and the players as he was through the vocal chords and words. You can hear Bobby Hebb take you to another place of existence when listening to his highly intuitive and very personal musical essays.

And then there’s Proud Soul Heritage, another copyright so key to this collection. The son of blind music teachers, Hebb’s matrix was that of a young person absorbing musical skills at a young age; developing his own euphonious personality alongside those who spoke also through their craftsmanship. Nurtured in this world his sense of rhythm, comfort with the stage and ability to listen to others around him gave Bobby Hebb a more unique focus that when his input was nurtured and allowed to blossom, The result was music that the entire world embraced and felt good from experiencing.

“Proud Soul Heritage” has a gospel feel even without a gospel choir. It is as different from “Sunny” as “Crazy Baby” is from “My Best Friend”. Hebb wrote in so many styles it was like someone having a grasp of 17 different languages but able to speak those languages through a "universal translator." "Proud Soul Heritage," in particular, has a strong melody, a firm belief in family and an acknowledgment of all that “Sunny” is, all that Bobby Hebb is. It came from the very roots of the family tree discussed in the composition, a pure acknowledgment to the love that cared for young Bobby and delivered his genius to the world.

The striking melody and chord changes to Bobby Hebb’s masterpiece, “Sunny”, has inspired tens of thousands - if not hundreds of thousands - perhaps millions - of singers, songwriters and muscians as well as millions and millions and millions and millions of fans. The song is proliferating at a rapid rate on video sites like YouTube as well as in karaoke bars, constantly on stages around the world and in a variety of recording studios. That is beyond the 1020 versions (as of this writing in early 2014) our long-time archivist, Richard Ely has documented on compact disc, vinyl and cassette as of June 2013.

These 28 titles from Bobby Hebb include demonstration tapes that were intended for other artists to consider recording. Beginning with the knock-out performance of “Love You” the voice of Robert Hebb is there in its pure form, undeniable strength and majesty. “Don’t You Care” was covered by the revered Alice Clark as was “Charms of the Arms of Love” (Clark also covered “Hard, Hard Promises,” not on this set.) Two of the 3 songs covered by Clark are back to back here. “Dreamy” was a side of the final Philips 45 (see CD #1) with this being the demo version, cleaned up from acetate by Dr. Beatles Erik Taros (as was “Charms of the Arms of Love.)

From Boom Records release of Sam Hall Jr. in 1966, most likely recorded much earlier, to the final recording Bobby made in the studio 2009/2010, "Breeze," instrumentals have been a major part of Bobby Hebb's career, something not known to the public that enjoys "Sunny," "A Natural Man," "A Satisfied Mind," "Love, Love, Love," and "You Want to Change Me" - the commercial songs that got the most radio and club play.

"Another Plane of Existence" is a title Bobby performed with The Kubota Power Jazz Unit on 9-22-00 and again with the Michael Shea Trio on June 29, 2001 for the opening of the Martini & Rossi Exhibit at the Mass State Transportation Building. When Bobby recorded in New York City with Bernard Purdie at Silver Cup Studios, three instrumentals were tracked, including a studio version of "Another Plane of Existence."

"Prodigal Stroll" is a tune from the 1981 Dimension Sound Studio / Intermedia sessions while "Evil Woman Coda" and the Fleetwood Studio Instrumental are from the 1979 recordings in Revere.

Bobby also had an intro number performed at Lynn Auditorium on July 26, 2002 and again in Kyoto Japan. The intro # from Japan is included in this collection.
